About Us

|
Since the rest of this site is dedicated to our beloved Chihuahuas I would like to tell you a little bit about us as a family. We are a home based Husband/Wife breeding team, located in Southern California. Our family consists of three beautiful children named Brittany, Ashley and Eric Jr., a giant cat named "Ed", a Bichon Frise rescue named "Milo", two retired Schutzhund trained Pit Bull terriers, a teddy bear hamster named "Marshmellow" , a rosy boa snake "Mr. Strangles" and a house full of Chihuahuas. 15 years ago I would not have believed that I would even own a Chihuahua let alone breed them. My passion for this small breed began in 2003 when a close friend brought over a teeny little rescue named "LaLa". She instantly won me over and I was determined to get one of my own. Several months pass before I found my perfect pet (well that and it took an awful lot of bribing on my part!). His name was Chili and was so far from having correct conformation it was ridiculous. He was a teeny tiny gangly little frail creature who's ears towered miles above his scrawny little nearly bald head but I was hooked! I loved that sweet boy like nothing I've ever known before. We were always "big dog people" having owned, trained and bred only large breeds such as Presa Canarios, Rottweiler's and Pit Bulls before but when we were blessed with this little creature our opinion on these little yappy, ankle biters changed forever! They are one of the most loving, devoted, intelligent and interesting beings I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. They have taught me so much more about myself, love & life than anything I could have ever imagined. The unconditional love, patience, tolerance and devotion they show is admirable and I strive to have these qualities myself. Our kennel name prefix is "Pofahl's" which is our last name. It seems easy enough to say but for some reason people think its "Puff ball" or some other ridiculous pronunciation; that's ok we think its a funny last name too.... Eric and I love to laugh and joke around and rarely take anything too serious. I want to stress one thing; although we are called "Pofahl Kennels" we have in no way shape or form any "kennels" here. In fact; our dogs have their own bedroom in our home and their own play yard. The dogs
live in our home as part of our family. While I, Kelly Pofahl am the main
caretaker, nutritional analyst, excrement disposal specialist, professional
phone and email answerer (is that even a word?!? LOL) show handler, groomer,
maid, labor/delivery assistant, financial analyst, secretary, adoption
specialist, veterinarian, trainer, paper pusher, organizer, personal
assistant, housekeeper, chauffeur and personal chew toy to all the dogs Eric
does all the "hard work" spending the day loving on the dogs and playing
with the puppies. In 2006 I was blessed to find a mentor (you know who you
are D.C.!) that introduced me to the wonderful world of AKC conformation
competition.
Not only did she teach me invaluable information about the breed, feeding,
whelping, handling, showing etcs. but she showed me first hand what kinds of
compromises I would need to make in my life and home to live with multiple
dogs. UGH... Now we are in the middle. The middle is a hard part and many a well-intentioned show person/ breeder has lost themselves here. Throughout the last 2 years I think I know why, and so, to my reluctant mentor(s) who would be horrified to be named by name LINDA, I cannot explain in words how much your support and, yes, FRIENDSHIP, has meant. Just to have ringing laughter on the other end of the phone when I have done something incredibly stupid, or a kind word when I am being hard on myself or others- it has been the difference between success and failure. You inspire in me "the will to achieve". Well, that is the human element behind Pofahls Chihuahuas- I know I should have put in all of the blah, blah, blah about "producing the finest quality... show standard...soundness.... and on and on. However, you already know that. I wanted to give you a glimpse into WHO we are.
Now - More about the dogs! We only breed AKC Chihuahuas and show them in AKC conformation events. We take pride in our dogs, that's why we put our name on it!
*We are an
AKC Inspected Breeder. Click HERE to see our inspection report* We only breed a few times a year, please contact me to be put on a waiting list for upcoming litters. We breed for our needs first. However, in order to keep a fair and manageable number of Chihuahuas to ensure they all get proper attention; we wont be able to keep all of them, so from time to time I will have available pet & show quality babies for adoption. Feel free to browse around and see the beauty of my fur babies and if you have any questions or just want to talk "Chihuahuas" give us a call! Take a look at our puppy nursery! Click on thumbnails for larger view.
RE-HOME POLICY: Very occasionally circumstances are such that a puppy does not work out in its new home. Or maybe later on circumstances arise where the person can no longer care for their adult dog. In these or other similar situations we are happy to take the puppy or adult dog back until a new home can be found, but we do not offer exchanges or refunds, so please give serious thought to your decision to purchase.
COME VISIT US!: We have a strict requirement of all our guests, we ask that you do NOT go to see other puppies any where in the same day before coming to our home. This is how Parvo Virus gets spread! It is a little safer if the puppies have been vaccinated, but it isn't 100% safe until the puppies have received their "entire series" of vaccinations, puppies will receive vaccinations every 2-3 weeks until 16 weeks of age and until the ENTIRE series of vaccines are finished the puppies can still catch Parvo and other deadly contagious diseases! The most common way puppies get Parvo is from people bringing the germs to them on their clothes and shoes. Even if you have not been around other puppies the germs can still be picked up from contaminated side walks and grass and then tracked in on your clothes or the soles of your shoes.
Thank you for taking the time to
read this and getting to know us! We want to thank you for your interest in
our Chihuahuas and hope you enjoy your stay here on our site. Feel free to contact us with any questions or
just to talk "Chihuahuas"!
Thank you ... The Pofahl Family
